Layers

We use a natural layering system of cotton canvas and wool sheep felt in combination with a top of the line housewrap. From selling yurts and living in our own yurt for years we have evolved our layering system to fulfill the largest amount of customer and climate needs and to be what we believe the very best system out there.

Felt

100% sheep wool felt made by machine to ensure continuity and uniformity throughout. Not only is it a beautifully showcased behind the decorative rafters and lattice walls, wool itself has many more amazing properties beyond cold weather insulation.

  • Hot weather insulation

  • Fire Resistant

  • Moisture Wicking

  • Mildew and Mold Resistant

  • Hypoallergenic

  • Extremely Flexible and Durable

  • Environmentally sustainable. “No sheep were harmed in the procurement of wool”.

  • Dampens the exterior and interior sound. Making sound softer on the ears and experience.

Housewrap

The high tec housewrap; although it prevents the claim of 100% all natural product. We believe this layer greatly compliments the beneficial characteristics of the natural layers, life of the yurt, and even extends the suitable climate and range of the Mongolian Ger. Genghis Khan would approve of this modernized modification solely on the idea of making the yurt more suitable in an expanding empire.

The housewrap is a mechanically attached, water resistive, vapor permeable, air barrier membrane, with built-in rain screen drainage matrix and integrated tape for easy install.

• Creates drainage and an air pocket behind decorative canvas for faster drying, water resiliency, and thermal break
• Vapor permeable allows yurt material to dry from the inside out. Wether you are cooking or drying out wet clothes moisture generated inside has an ability to escape the yurt.
• Air barrier increasing energy efficiency
• Benefits in all seasons and all weather

Canvas

We use a heavy decorative white cotton canvas as the outer most layer. This layer takes the most damage from the elements. UV being the most damaging. If used in conjunction with housewrap (older yurts did not have housewrap but instead a 2nd canvas layer) you can treat the canvas for waterproofness as the drainage matrix allows condensed vapor to drain behind it. But waterproofing is not necessary. We do recommend cleaning the decorative canvas annually with ecofriendly soap and treating the canvas for mildew and UV prevention as needed. There are many products available to do so.

Crown Cover

Made in the USA of Army Duck canvas and translucent Klearspan vinyl, our crown cover is unique and custome made for only our yurts. Unlike the traditional covering which always covers half of the crown and creates darkness when pulled over, our system offers full light exposure on rainy days and is easily pulled back halfway on sunny days for fresh air. A portion of the circular section of the crown cover is canvas that can be cut and a chimney passed through (check out our stove system for more details and easy its easy installation). We use translucent Klearspan vinyl for its UV protection, pliability, and tear resistance. Clear vinyl is susceptible to UV, cold, and doesn’t like to be folded.
